SOUTH BEND – A new immersive art installation that gives the illusion of an endless tunnel at Pier Park, a small park next to downtown Century Center, will go live in a grand public opening Friday night.
“Aether’s Requiem,” as a Tribune article describes on March 25, local visual artist Cara Givens uses mirrors and small lights to create this illusion in a closed tunnel that was closed, which connected the park to the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. Givens uses the artist name GIIVENS. Visitors also hear the sounds of a multi-directional speaker system that local musician Eli Kahn created with instrumental and vocal music and industrial and aquatic sounds.
The public is invited to the opening which will begin at 6:30 p.m. with specialty drinks sold by Bare Hands Brewery and desserts sold by All Over Creations.
The park is located at the southeast corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Colfax Avenue, accessible by a wooden ramp.
The city’s Venues Parks & Arts department reports that funding for the installation comes from grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, and Visit South Bend.
