Today, they released the results of their recent research study on teaching math and writing during the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 300 teachers across the United States responded to surveys specific to their field of education. All 198 writing teachers and 125 math teachers use Texthelp products. The surveys were designed to find out teachers’ perceptions of the teaching of writing and math. They also showed the effects on student learning in the past year.
The results revealed that teachers perceived that students were much less engaged in the past school year. They also felt that learning was lagging behind. Writing, in particular, was seen to have reached crisis levels. Almost 80% of writing teachers surveyed believe that one in two students did not meet expectations.
The investigation also revealed positive results. Almost all teachers have taken advantage of digital tools to support distance, hybrid or classroom learning. In many cases, they used more than one tool to ensure that students had access to the program and were engaged. Almost all teachers have seen the value and benefits of digital tools in their classroom. And the majority (almost 90%) plan to continue using learning tools over the next school year. These trends indicate that the modern classroom is using technology to adapt to the complex needs of students, wherever they learn.
Shortly after the start of the pandemic, Texthelp saw a 175% increase in the use of its digital math tool and a 200% increase in the use of its writing tool. Many teachers have moved from occasional to everyday use of these digital tools. The teachers who responded to the study used the Equatio® or WriQ® throughout the year. As a result, teachers experienced increased effectiveness at all levels. Plus, students now have the accessible and engaging tools they need.
The results of the study include:
- Navigate blended and distance learning:
- 85% said student engagement in writing has become lower since the start of the pandemic
- 49% said they spent less time writing instructions during distance and hybrid learning
- Increased emphasis on writing achievement:
- 33% said 25% or less of students meet writing expectations
- 47% think only 25-50% of students meet writing expectations
- Improved teacher training:
- 85% noted that there is no specialist dedicated to teaching writing
- 73% need more training or do not have adequate training to teach writing well
- Increased use and benefits of digital mathematical tools:
- 64% used an edtech math tool at least once a day to create digital math during blended, blended, or distance learning
- 83% relied more on mathematics teaching tools because of blended, blended or distance learning
- Low student engagement in mathematics:
- 76% found student engagement to be lower since the start of the pandemic
- Beyond the pandemic:
- 89% said as teaching returned to the classroom they would continue to use the digital / hybrid techniques that were used during the pandemic
