MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The St. Paul Public Schools School Board on Tuesday night approved a plan to spend more than $ 200 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds.

The board said its plan had four priorities for spending $ 207 million in funding the US bailout over the next three years: reopening safe schools, remedying unfinished learning, building ” sustainable and equitable education and learning systems ”and support social and emotional needs.

“We believe that the strategies we propose will help us achieve our goals as a District,” said Superintendent Joe Gothard, “and we are committed to monitoring their progress and making the necessary adjustments to ensure that every dollar is spent. to fairly meet the needs of our students, families, staff and the community at large.

Of the $ 207 million, about $ 88 million goes to what the council calls “high quality education.” This includes $ 24.5 million in direct funding to schools, $ 23 million for basic reading and math education, $ 17 million in professional development for teachers and more.

About $ 67 million will be spent on safe schools, including $ 42.3 million for building maintenance cleaning. Fifteen million dollars will be set aside for COVID-19 contingency funds. The district will invest $ 700,000 in transportation, which includes incentives for bus drivers to address the current shortage.

Over $ 11 million is allocated to “targeted student services” such as special education and multilingual learning. An additional $ 11 million will go to family services and community partnerships.

The district has allocated nearly $ 10 million for “systemic equity”, half of which will be used to develop and implement a “district equity plan”.

Eight million dollars will be used to support mental health services and socio-emotional learning.

Districts are required to set aside 20% of funds to deal with “learning loss”.

The district said it considered more than 11,000 responses from students, families, teachers and other school staff when developing the plan.
