VM schools launch vaccination competition

CABELL COUNTY, WV – With the start of the school year just around the corner, a new push has started in Mountain State.

Thanks to an “I Got Vaxxed” competition, started by the Deputy Superintendent, schools are now competing to see who can vaccinate the most vaccinated students, faculty and staff. Organizers say they can see the good in the new initiative.

“We really want it to be fun, but we also want to get more students vaccinated. It allows more time in class and allows more structure to take place when our children are in school. So our hope is that many students get immunized and that the children can stay in school and learn, ”said Keith Thomas, Student Support Coordinator for Cabell County Schools.

The prize for the competition is a $ 5,000 stipend that will be awarded to a high school, college, and elementary school across the state and that money can be used for events students may have missed due to COVID- 19.

Organizers say they don’t expect any reluctance as the competition is voluntary, and a few residents of downtown Huntington say they agree.

“The more we can have, especially now that most of the older people got it and some of the younger people are more reluctant, I think this initiative is great; especially for people who are going to be around children, ”explains Zach Atkinson.

Another resident, Steve Hendrick, says he thinks it’s great. He says it will help slow the spread and because his daughter attends school in Cabell County, he thinks it’s good.

“I think it’s really important to motivate schools and only local people to get vaccinated. As well as simply increasing awareness of the vaccine and the benefits it can bring to the local community and public health, ”said Casey Singh.

The winner of the contest will be determined in October.

If you would like to be vaccinated, you can find more information at www.vaccinated.wv.gov.
